Where would I be if I'd listened to me?
Let's see...
I wanted to be an airline stewardess,
In the days when women were used
To present an image to all of the world
As social creatures, yet intellectually excused.
I wanted to be an ice skater,
In the days where women could act
Like ethereal images from fairy tales,
While keeping opinions and ideas abstract.
I wanted to be a veterinarian,
In the days when women were still
Asked to be wives and mothers first,
While giving up dreams, talents, and free will.
I wanted to be the first female jockey,
In the days when women could only ride
In fancy shows or rodeos, even though
We were equally talented and highly qualified.
I wanted to have courage and strength,
In the days when women were finally free
To be educated and to think for themselves,
But, too late, I’d given up on all I could ever be...
All because I never learned how to just listen to me!
